McNally was recognized at a retirement walkout ceremony at the Morris County Administration and Records Building. County officials, Prosecutor's Office and Sheriff's Office colleagues, local police departments and members of the Morris County Police Chiefs Association attended. Commissioner Director Stephen Shaw presented McNally with a Resolution of Honor recognizing his law-enforcement career and service in the United States Marine Corps.
McNally began his law-enforcement career in 1996 with the United States Customs Service in Newark after serving as a Marine sniper team leader during three deployments. He joined the Morris County Prosecutor's Office in 2003, serving in intelligence and professional standards before moving to the Major Crimes Unit. In 2007, the Morris County Detectives Association named him Detective of the Year for his work as lead detective in a homicide investigation.
After advancing through the ranks from sergeant to deputy chief of investigations, McNally was appointed chief of detectives in February 2023. In that role, he led the Prosecutor's Office investigative division and coordinated with Morris County's 37 police departments, the Sheriff's Office, New Jersey State Police and federal law-enforcement partners.
McNally also served as a firearms instructor, hostage and crisis negotiator, and Tactical Narcotics Team member. A longtime member of the Morris County Police Pipes and Drums, he has also performed at the county's Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies.
