Morris County Marks 25th Anniversary of Sept. 11 Attacks

Families of victims, first responders, public officials and community members gathered at the Morris County 9/11 Memorial in Parsippany-Troy Hills to mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

The annual ceremony honored the 64 Morris County residents who were killed. Their names were read aloud as retired Morris County Fire Marshal James Davidson rang a bell after each name, a solemn ritual that connected those lost with family members and residents gathered at the memorial.

Dennis Letts, a retired U.S. Secret Service executive and Tunnel to Towers Foundation ambassador, delivered the keynote address. Letts, who participated in evacuation efforts at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, spoke about the day’s enduring lessons and the responsibility to preserve its memory for people who were too young to experience it firsthand.

The ceremony also included the addition of a bronze plaque bearing “A Day Like No Other,” a poem by Mark Viglione that remembers FDNY firefighter Thomas Sabella. Sabella’s sister, Parsippany resident Loretta Viglione, was among those connected to the memorial observance.

The Morris County 9/11 Memorial remains a place of reflection and education as the county continues its annual commitment to remember the victims, the first responders and the community response that followed the attacks.
